Community Outreach Ambassador and Dental Receptionist

The short version
This is two jobs in one, and both halves are real. Half of it is outreach, out on the road across northern Saskatchewan, in front of rooms and building relationships. Half of it is working our front desk as a dental receptionist, in Prince Albert, with the rest of our administrative team.

We are looking for someone who is comfortable standing in front of a room, good with people one at a time, well organised, and willing to spend about half of their working life on the highway.

Many of our patients travel a very long way to reach us, and a large share of the people we care for are First Nations and Métis. We want someone who can build trusted working relationships with the communities we serve, carry information out to them, and be the familiar voice on the telephone when somebody calls us back.

What you would actually do
About half your time, on the road. Visiting health centres, schools, band offices and community events across the north. Running oral health information sessions for groups, from a handful of people to a full hall. Building working relationships with health directors, health centre staff and transport coordinators. Helping communities and our clinics arrange care around the reality of the journey.

About half your time, at our two clinics in Prince Albert, working as a dental receptionist. This is a genuine half of the job rather than something you fit in around the travel. Answering the telephone and booking appointments. Greeting and checking in patients. Managing the schedule across two locations. Taking payments and handling accounts. Submitting coverage claims, including Non-Insured Health Benefits, and preparing predeterminations and confirmations of attendance so that patients do not have to. Keeping records accurate.

Alongside the front desk work, you would be the named contact that health centre staff can reach directly, look after patients who have travelled a long way and make sure their day works, and coordinate the appointment book around travel and overnight stays. Working the desk is also how you will learn the practice well enough to speak for it.

What we are looking for
Presence. You are comfortable speaking to a group and you do it well. You can hold a room of teenagers, a room of elders, and a room of health centre staff, and adjust without losing the thread.

Warmth, one to one. Strong customer service instincts. You are easy to talk to, you listen properly, and you stay calm and courteous when somebody is upset, in pain or has had a very long day.

Organisation. You can plan a trip, keep commitments, remember what you promised, keep records straight and hand back accurate information. A great deal of this role is remembering the small things that other people forget.

Judgment and independence. You will often be a long way from the office and making decisions on your own.

Willingness to drive. A valid driver's licence authorizing you to drive in Saskatchewan is required for this role. You should be comfortable with long highway distances and with winter driving. Some trips involve an overnight stay.

Assets
Knowledge of First Nations and Métis cultures, communities and protocols in northern Saskatchewan
Experience working with or within Indigenous communities
Ability to speak or understand Cree, Dene or Michif
Any experience presenting, teaching, facilitating, or speaking publicly, in any setting
Experience at a front desk, in reception, in administration, or in health, education, community work or customer service
No dental experience is required and full training is provided. We do not expect you to arrive knowing anything about dentistry. We expect you to be good with people, organised, and willing to learn a field that is new to almost everybody who joins us.

Hours and travel
Full time and permanent. Travel is approximately half of the role and is a requirement of the position rather than an occasional extra. Trips are planned in advance and you will not be sent out at no notice.

Travel time is paid. Mileage is reimbursed. Accommodation, meals and any other reasonable expense on a trip are covered.

Overnight accommodation is arranged where total duty time, driving distance, weather, fatigue or road conditions make a same day return unsafe or inconsistent with employment standards.

Clinic days are worked across our two Prince Albert locations, which are eight minutes apart. Our clinics are open seven days a week between 9:00am and 8:00pm, and clinic shifts include some evenings and weekends. We will discuss your schedule with you, and we accommodate needs protected under applicable human rights legislation.
