Job Description

Dental Assistant — South Austin Dental Associates
Full-Time · In-Clinic · Competitive pay based on experience.

We are looking for a dedicated dental assistant who takes pride in their work, communicates well, and genuinely cares about patients. If you thrive in a fast-paced clinical environment and want to be part of a team that invests in its people, we would love to hear from you.

Role & Responsibilities As a Dental Assistant at South Austin Dental Associates, you work directly alongside the dentist and hygienists to deliver safe, efficient, and comfortable care to every patient.

Prepare and turn over treatment rooms between patients — trays, instruments, and materials set up for each procedure
Seat patients, review medical histories, and prepare them for treatment
Assist chairside during restorations, extractions, root canals, crown preparations, and cosmetic procedures
Perform four-handed dentistry: suction, retraction, instrument passing, and anticipating the next step
Take and process dental radiographs in compliance with Texas radiation safety requirements
Apply topical anesthetics, fluoride treatments, and sealants as directed by the supervising dentist
Take impressions for study models, night guards, and dental appliances under dentist delegation
Perform coronal polishing where trained and delegated by the supervising dentist
Place and remove rubber dams, matrices, and wedges as directed
Sterilize and process all instruments per OSHA and CDC infection control protocols
Maintain accurate, up-to-date patient records in the practice management system
Take and document vital signs
Provide patients with post-operative care instructions and oral hygiene education
Manage clinical supply inventory and reorder stock as needed
Support front desk with scheduling or check-out when the day requires it
Qualifications
High school diploma or GED required
Completion of an accredited Dental Assisting program preferred but not required — Texas does not mandate state licensure for dental assistants
Dental Radiography (X-ray) certification required for any assistant taking radiographs — must hold a valid radiation safety certificate from a TSBDE-approved provider
Current CPR/BLS certification required before start date
DANB Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) a strong asset but not mandatory
Coronal polishing certificate preferred — required to perform the procedure under Texas regulations
OSHA-compliant infection control training preferred
Skills
Proficient in four-handed dentistry and instrument transfer
Working knowledge of dental terminology, procedures, and materials
Ability to take accurate digital and conventional radiographs
Familiarity with practice management software — Dentrix, Eaglesoft, or similar
Strong room turnover and time management in a high-volume schedule
Accurate clinical charting and documentation habits
Understanding of HIPAA requirements and patient confidentiality
Comfortable assisting across multiple procedure types including surgical and restorative
Qualities We Are Looking For
Patient-centred and warm — you put anxious patients at ease before the dentist walks into the room
Detail-oriented — nothing gets missed in your setup, sterilization, or documentation
A team player — you communicate proactively and step in wherever the team needs you
Calm under pressure — a packed schedule or a complex procedure does not rattle you
Eager to grow — you take feedback well, ask good questions, and want to improve
Reliable — the dentist can count on you being ready before they walk through the door
Discreet and professional — you handle every patient interaction with care and confidentiality
What We Offer
Competitive hourly rate based on experience
Paid time off and paid holidays
Continuing education support and CE allowance
A team that respects your time and actively invests in your development
[Medical / dental / vision benefits if applicable]
