Job Description

Job Summary:

A Registered Dental Assistant (RDA) is a member of the Head & Neck Surgery/Maxillofacial Surgery team, providing direct support to the providers and the HNS/MFS operation, while working under the direct supervision of the dentist(s). The RDAs primary role will be to enhance to provider interactions with their customers utilizing specific knowledge and practicing special technical skills in the Maxillofacial Surgery specialty. The RDA will maximize opportunities for flexible operations within the department by assisting with provider visits as well as supporting department operations with clerical services (e.g., making appointments, scheduling surgical procedures, taking messages, registering patients, etc.).

Essential Responsibilities:

Under the general and/or direct supervision of the dentist as permitted in scope of practice, the RDA:
Rooms and prepares patients for examination.

Operates radiographic equipment, exposes radiographs, takes photographs.

Removes arch wires, sutures and ligature ties.

Takes bite registrations for diagnostic models for case study, takes impressions for diagnostic and opposing models and sports guards.

Makes surgical splints and diagnostic casts (alginates).

Places and/or removes post-extraction and periodontal dressings.

Completes mouth mirror examination of the oral cavity including documenting missing teeth, lesions, existing restorations, etc.

Takes intra-oral measurements for orthodontic procedures.

Applies non-aerosol and non-caustic topical agents and/or fluoride.

Makes and cancels appointments.

Obtains and prepares the appropriate medical information (records, files, forms, diagnostic results) for the provider.

Records relevant medical information for the provider (i.e., assessments, plans, interventions, and spectacles).

Completes forms and other necessary data entry.

Documents concise and relevant histories in the medical record.

Prepares lab, x-ray and other requisitions, as needed.

Labels specimen and Pathology Requests forms.

Logs procedures in appropriate logbook.

Sets up and assists with minor dental and maxillofacial surgical procedures, as needed by setting up supplies, handling instruments, etc.

Anticipate provider needs (preparation of supplies, instruments and equipment).

Cleans (changing cleaning solutions, as needed), wraps, labels and re-stocks instruments.

Maintains equipment and orders/stocks supplies.

Orders and maintains inventory par levels of supplies, forms, medications, etc. as needed.

Keeps work area clean.

Calls patients with messages from providers and documents disposition.

Documents, updates and processes records relating to provider appointments.

Performs surgical scheduling functions, as needed.

Performs other related duties as necessary.

Basic Qualifications:

Experience

Twelve (12) months satisfactory work experience as a dental assistant in California.

Per the National Agreement, current KP Coalition employees have this experience requirement waived.

Education

High School Diploma/GED.

License, Certification, Registration

N/A

Additional Requirements:

Must successfully complete PARRS II and KP HealthConnect training.

Good verbal and written communication skills, including legible handwriting.

Ability to read, comprehend and follow simple instructions in English.

Demonstrated ability to work effectively in teams required.

Must be willing to work in a Labor Management Partnership environment.
