DENTAL HYGIENIST
GENERAL OBJECTIVES: Responsible for providing hygiene treatment to patients.
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES
Equipment Management
- Check hygiene room for cleanliness; make necessary changes
- Check and turn on hygiene room equipment, computer, monitor & radio
- Gather and review patient charts for the next day
- Clean hygiene room at the end of the day; turn off equipment; run hot water/solution through suction lines nightly
- Check patient charts for accuracy at each patient visit
- Review, select and submit orders for patient education materials for the practice
- Monitor inventory of hygiene supplies and submit orders as necessary
PATIENT MANAGEMENT
- Check with the Patient Care Coordinator (PCC) on daily schedule for hygiene patients
- Work with PCC to schedule hygiene patients with efficiency
- Carefully review patient medical and dental history forms and update as necessary
- Accurately chart each patient’s periodontal health in computer, making notes in chart
- Provide thorough and gentle prophylaxis to patients
- Perform scaling, root planning and selective polishing for designated patients
- Provide radiographs for patients as prescribed by dentist
- Provide topical fluoride applications for designated patients as prescribed by dentist
- Administer antibiotic (Arestin) sub-gingivally for designated patients as prescribed by dentist
- Administer topical anesthetic (Oraqix) for designated patients as prescribed by dentist
- Communicate with patients in an understandable and professional way
- Check on patient comfort during treatment; help allay patient anxiety
- Record accurate notes on the provided treatment
- Provide patient education sessions and materials to patients
- Perform other tasks as assigned by dentist
Infection Control Procedures for Hygiene Treatment Area
- Properly discard all disposable items from each visit
- Assemble soiled instruments and place in appropriate areas designated in Sterilization Lab
- Clean treatment room surfaces with disinfectant solution
- Process instruments, when necessary, through appropriate sterilization methods
- Store instruments and trays in appropriate places in hygiene treatment areas
OFFICE PARTICIPATION
- Be an active participant in staff meetings
- Promote team concept by interacting with others in the office
- Uphold and promote the ideals of the practice’s mission statement
PERSONNEL REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
- Must have completed at least 2 years post-secondary education from an accredited dental hygiene program
- Experience providing prophylaxis and taking x-rays
- Legible handwriting for notations in patient charts
- Must be licensed to practice in state of Indiana and meet other applicable state requirements
INTERPERSONAL
- Good interpersonal skills to maintain effective rapport with patients, dentists, other staff members and community
- Effective verbal skills to communicate with patients and staff
