PRIMARY FUNCTION

The Dental Team Leader serves as the on-site departmental supervisor, monitoring daily functions of their team to ensure optimal workflow. The Team Leader reports up to the Service Line Manager as necessary and serves as an intermediary between departments to build relationships, develop teams, and solve problems to better serve patients. This description is in addition to the core duties of an Expanded Duties Dental Assistant.

The Expanded Duties Dental Assistant also assists dentists in providing efficient and effective care in treatment of patients and is responsible for prepping the operatory for patient procedures, arranging patient trays, escorting patients from waiting area to the operatory, and assisting the dentist with clinical procedures. Dental Assistants are tasked with keeping the operatory stocked, processing dental equipment through appropriate cleaning and sterilization steps, organizing patient flow for optimum efficiency, and cleaning and sterilizing the operatory following patient procedures. The Dental Assistant works as part of an integrated care team to provide high quality coordinated care.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES

Team Leader

Establish the patient as the priority and focuses work around the customer service experience, for themselves as well as for the team.

Supervise daily functions of the team, ensuring appropriate protocols and policies are followed.

Monitor the daily workflow for efficiency.

Reassign staff as needed or indicated by the Service Line Manager.

Ensure all departmental logs are completed appropriately and completely.

Approve daily timecards and ensures that team members arrive on time and take appropriate meal and break periods.

Develop staff through coaching and training activities on a regular basis.

Complete evaluations for staff on team.

Build relationships amongst team leaders and colleagues to improve interoffice communications and develop teamwork capabilities.

Collaborate through face to face and IM interactions with both providers and the dental and medical team leaders to solve issues that may present throughout the course of the day.

Participate in monthly clinic team leader meetings to identify workflow issues and troubleshoot potential solutions to present to management team.

Triage patient complaints and issues and solve as able. Route complicated issues to the next level of management or appropriate department as needed.

Share appropriate and pertinent information with team in timely manner.

Attend monthly and quarterly meetings to obtain organizational informational.

Lead monthly team meeting to share organizational information and deliver quarterly team trainings.

Expanded Duties Dental Assistant

Follow organizational guidelines for patient workflow and monitor schedule for quick patient care.

Complete all steps necessary to prepare operatory and room patient prior to dentist seeing the patient, including collecting health history and updating patient chart. Review chart notes and verify reason for visit with patient.

Assist the dentist throughout the patient visit and work under direction of the dentist to complete all tasks associated with direct patient care including chairside assisting, 4-handed dentistry, etc. Obtain radiographic images and load into the electronic dental record system. Deliver preventive education to patients.

Complete expanded clinical duties as indicated by the dentist.

Complete paperwork associated with patient care (i.e. lab cases, preauthorization requests) as directed by the dentist and/or supervisor.

Determine and schedule follow-up appointments as required, explain post-treatment instructions to patients, and see patient to check-out desk to finalize the visit.

Complete all necessary procedures for maintaining proper maintenance of the operatory and dental equipment.

Use downtime to complete activities that support efficient departmental operation.

Complete departmental activities that support the hygienist to further support efficiency and team goals.

Perform related work and other duties or tasks as assigned.

ACCOUNTABILITY

Accountable to the Dental Service Line Manager.

SUPERVISION

Provide direct supervision to Dental Department clinical support staff.

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS

Dental office environment with frequent contact with staff and the public. Frequently exposed to blood, toxic or caustic chemicals. Frequent exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, oral preparations, and other conditions common to a clinic environment. Position may involve dealing with angry or upset people. Work may be stressful at times.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

Occasional travel between sites to provide departmental coverage, as needs present.

WORK HOURS

37.5 hours per week, subject to wage and labor laws.

SALARY

$15.04 - $23.68 per hour, based on experience.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Minimum Education: High School Diploma AND completion of an Expanded Duties Dental Assistant program.

Minimum Experience: No experience required, however 1-year dental assisting experience preferred.

Required License: Certificate of Completion from an Expanded Duties Dental Assisting program. American Heart Association Basic Life Support Certification.

Qualifications

Successful applicants will be mature and well organized with pleasant personality and speaking voice. As this position works directly with the patient in providing direct and close contact patient care, professional appearance and a friendly demeanor are required. Knowledge of dental office procedures, basic computer skills, and scheduling. Position requires skills in verbal and written communication. Ability to communicate information clearly and effectively with patients and colleagues. Ability to work effectively with co-workers as a team member. Some knowledge of the operation of a primary care center is desirable.
