NJOFS is a modern, patient-focused Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery practice seeking a skilled and motivated Surgical/Dental Assistant to join our growing team. Our practice is committed to providing the highest level of surgical care in a professional, supportive, and team-oriented environment.
We are looking for an assistant with 1–3 years of oral surgery experience preferred, although experienced general dental assistants who are motivated to learn oral surgery are encouraged to apply.
Position Overview
The Surgical/Dental Assistant will work closely with the oral surgeon and clinical team to assist with outpatient oral surgery procedures, patient care, and clinical operations. The ideal candidate is organized, dependable, detail-oriented, and comfortable in a fast-paced surgical environment, and is comfortable working in a team setting.
This role requires strong communication skills, the ability to anticipate the surgeon’s needs during procedures, and a commitment to maintaining the highest standards of patient safety and infection control.
Responsibilities
Clinical & Surgical Assistance
Assist the oral surgeon during surgical procedures including:
Wisdom teeth extractions
Dental implant placement
Bone grafting
Surgical extractions
Cosmetic surgery procedures
Other oral surgical procedures
Prepare and maintain the surgical operatory before and after procedures
Maintain sterile field and adhere to strict infection control protocols
Anticipate surgeon needs and provide efficient chairside assistance
Assist with patient monitoring and support during procedures
Take radiographs (panoramic, CBCT, and intraoral imaging when applicable)
Patient Care
Prepare patients for surgery and review medical history
Provide clear and compassionate pre-operative and post-operative instructions
Ensure patient comfort and safety throughout treatment
Support anxious patients with a calm and reassuring demeanor
Assist with post-operative follow-up care when necessary
Clinical Operations
Sterilization of instruments and maintenance of sterilization logs
Preparation of surgical trays and supplies
Maintain proper inventory of clinical materials
Ensure operatories are fully stocked and organized
Follow OSHA, CDC, and HIPAA compliance standards
Qualifications
Preferred Qualifications
1–3 years of Dental or Oral Surgery assisting experience
Experience assisting with:
Wisdom teeth extractions
Dental implant surgery
IV sedation procedures
Minimum Qualifications
Dental assisting experience in a general dental practice
X-ray certification (required)
CPR/BLS certification (required. We will provide training annually)
Knowledge of dental instruments and clinical procedures
Strong attention to detail and ability to multitask
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Professional demeanor and strong work ethic
Additional Qualifications (Preferred but Not Required)
Oral surgery experience
Sedation monitoring experience
Experience with digital radiography and CBCT imaging
Experience with dental software systems
Compensation
$24 – $30 per hour, based on experience and qualifications
