Job Description
Job Summary
We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Orthodontic Dental Assistant to join our dynamic ortho team. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in dental assisting, with specialized knowledge in orthodontic procedures and patient care. As an Orthodontic Dental Assistant, you will support orthodontists in delivering high-quality treatment, ensuring patient comfort, and maintaining clinical efficiency. Your role will be vital in managing patient interactions, preparing treatment areas, and adhering to strict infection control protocols to uphold the highest standards of safety and confidentiality.
Responsibilities
Assist orthodontists during various procedures, including bracket placement, wire adjustments, and appliance fittings using chairside assisting techniques.
Prepare treatment rooms by sterilizing dental instruments and ensuring all necessary materials and equipment are ready for scheduled procedures.
Take and develop dental X-ray images, including panoramic and cephalometric radiographs, ensuring compliance with radiation safety standards.
Manage patient records accurately within electronic medical record (EMR) systems such as Dentrix or Eaglesoft, maintaining clinical confidentiality policies at all times.
Educate patients on orthodontic care instructions, appliance maintenance, and oral hygiene practices to promote optimal treatment outcomes.
Monitor vital signs as needed and assist with medical imaging or other diagnostic procedures related to orthodontic treatment.
Maintain infection prevention management by following aseptic techniques and dental sterilization procedures diligently.
Support general dentistry tasks when required, including patient management software updates and administrative duties typical of a dental receptionist role.
Ensure the proper handling and processing of dental instruments while adhering to dental sterilization protocols.
Collaborate with team members in four-handed dentistry practices to enhance efficiency during clinical procedures.
Requirements
Proven experience as a Dental Assistant with specialization in orthodontics preferred; prior experience in pediatric dentistry or general dentistry is advantageous.
Proficiency in EMR systems such as Dentrix or Eaglesoft for managing medical records and documentation.
Knowledge of dental terminology, anatomy, and clinical procedures related to orthodontics, oral surgery, endodontics, prosthodontics, and implantology.
Certification in dental assisting, with additional training or certification in X-ray technology required; familiarity with 3D scanners is a plus.
Strong understanding of infection control standards, medical documentation practices, and healthcare infection prevention protocols.
Ability to perform dental instrument processing efficiently while maintaining aseptic technique standards.
Excellent communication skills for patient education and team collaboration within a fast-paced clinical environment.
Knowledge of HIPAA regulations to ensure compliance with patient privacy laws.
