Job Description
Overview
Did you become a hygienist because you liked dentistry, patient care, and being part of the clinical side of things but then realized traditional hygiene might not be the right long-term fit?
That can be a hard thing to admit. You worked hard for your hygiene license, and maybe you still like the dental field. Maybe you enjoy patients, learning, and being hands-on, but the thought of doing hygiene all day, every day, does not feel like what you want anymore.
At Metropolitan Periodontists, we are looking for a licensed dental hygienist who wants to use their clinical knowledge in a different way. This is not a typical hygiene role. Instead, you would work alongside our periodontists in a surgical and periodontal support position that includes surgical prep, assisting during procedures, new patient exams, follow-up visits, digital impressions, and patient education.
It is a great fit for someone who wants to stay in dentistry, keep growing clinically, and have more variety in their day.
Duties
Prepare patients for periodontal and implant surgical procedures.
Assist the periodontists during surgical procedures.
Take blood pressure and review patient readiness for treatment.
Provide home care instructions and post-operative education.
Assist with new patient exams, including intake, gathering clinical information, and patient education.
Support follow-up visits and help monitor patient healing and treatment progress.
Take digital impressions and assist with clinical records.
Support clinical care.
Help maintain patient flow throughout the clinical day.
Maintain accurate documentation in Curve Dental while following HIPAA guidelines.
Follow infection prevention protocols, including operatory preparation, aseptic technique, and instrument sterilization.
Work closely with periodontists, hygienists, assistants, and administrative team members to create a smooth patient experience.
Qualifications
Current Minnesota Dental Hygiene license required.
Local anesthesia certification required.
Dental hygiene experience required.
Periodontal or surgical experience preferred, but not required.
Comfortable working in a hands-on clinical setting.
Strong communication skills and ability to educate patients clearly and compassionately.
Detail-oriented with good follow-through and ownership of patient care.
Willingness to learn periodontal, implant, surgical, and digital workflow systems.
Comfortable working alongside periodontists, assistants, hygienists, and administrative team members.
About the Role
This role is designed for a licensed hygienist who wants to stay in dentistry but is looking for something different than traditional hygiene. You will use your hygiene background, clinical judgment, and patient care skills in a surgical specialty setting.
Because this is not a traditional hygiene production role, compensation is structured differently than a hygiene-only position. Pay range is $40–$45 per hour and will be discussed during the interview process.
This is a good fit for someone who enjoys learning, likes variety, and wants to be part of meaningful patient care in a nontraditional clinical role.
Pay: $40.00 - $45.00 per hour
Benefits:
401(k)
401(k) matching
Dental insurance
Health insurance
Health savings account
Paid time off
Retirement plan
Vision insurance
Work Location: In person
