Job Summary
Job incumbent examines individuals requiring dental care. Diagnoses patients dental conditions and prescribes and carries out, or directs others in carrying out appropriate therapy in conformance with approved clinical practices. Educates dental program staff in the nature of oral health related conditions and in the general promotion of health and the prevention of oral disease.
Adhere to the TCC Ch'eghwtsen' model of service and guiding principle which requires providing timely and effective service along with the ability to interact with others in a way that inspires trust and demonstrates respect, compassion and empathy.
Essential Functions
Essential Functions: Under the general supervision of the Dental Services Director, job incumbent:
1. Records patient-dentist transactions as they occur in the medical/dental record (in an organized format utilizing standard nomenclature) so that the record accurately reflects the nature of the contact, the condition of the patient, and the care provided. Completes referrals, data collection instruments and other records or paper work as required.
2. Assists in the provision of continuing education and on-the-job training as requested.
3. Assists in the provision of technical assistance and health education to the community as requested.
Other Responsibilities:
1. Performs other job related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
1. Doctor of Dental Surgery (D.D.S.) or Doctor of Dental Medicine (D.M.D.) from an A.D.A. approved school of dentistry.
2. Completion of an A.D.A. accredited dental residency program or course of study or two years experience in this field.
3. CPR certification.
4. Strong verbal, interpersonal, and analytical skills.
Supervision
Complexity: The work of the position consists of dental medicine, education, prevention, cure and rehabilitation. Assignments are categorized by breadth and intensity of effort and generally involve the simultaneous application of multiple distinct skills, knowledge, and abilities in the specialty care of one or more patients.
Scope of Work: This position affects the health and well being of individuals.
Personal Contacts: Personal contacts of the incumbent of this position are with private individuals and occasionally groups in the relatively structure setting of the TCC dental program.
Purpose of Contacts: The purpose of contacts with individuals or groups is to educate, influence, and motivate the individuals and groups to understand and to accept recommended medical/dental therapies and the direct provision of dental care.
Supervision: Job incumbent is under the general supervision of the Dental Director. The clinical work of the incumbent is expected to be definitive, and is evaluated through the Quality Assurance Program of the Center.
Physical demands: Position requires long periods of sitting, standing, recurring bending, stooping, crouching, stretching, and reaching. Job incumbent must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds in support of equipment/other. Patients may be required to be lifted bodily from time to time. Frequent travel to remote villages required. May be subject to harsh environmental conditions while performing field dental visits to villages. The conditions include but are not limited to: travel by small, unpressurized aircraft, 4WD suburban or van, lack of running water, poor heat, field equipment breaking down and incumbent expected to improvise, and extreme weather conditions. Handles contaminated and uncontaminated needles.
Work environment: Work involves regular and recurring exposure to potential hazards of radiation and communicable diseases, adverse weather, occasionally hostile patients, various dental materials (including mercury), and dental power equipment. Field/village travel is required in order to provide dental care to TCC beneficiaries in the outlying areas.
Summation: Job incumbent must be able to perform multiple tasks with frequent interruptions. Must be able to work with minimal supervision.
