Job Description
Position Overview: Lake Area Technical College is hiring a Supervising Dentist. The supervising dentist provides clinical oversight and professional guidance in the dental hygiene program’s clinic. This role ensures that patient care delivered by students meets professional, ethical, and regulatory standards while supporting the educational development of future dental hygienists.
Qualifications:
Licensed dentist in good standing in the state of South Dakota.
Minimum of 5 years of clinical dental experience.
Strong communication, teaching, and mentoring skills.
Knowledge of current dental hygiene practice standards, legal regulations, and patient care protocols.
Reports To: Dental Hygiene Program Director, Dean of Academics, Vice President
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Provide clinical oversight to ensure that student-delivered care adheres to professional standards and best practices.
Review patient histories, perform or confirm oral examinations, and make or verify diagnoses.
Approve or assist in developing treatment plans within the students’ scope of practice.
Supervise procedures requiring dentist oversight, including anesthesia administration and radiograph interpretation.
Be readily available during clinic hours to manage dental or medical emergencies.
Provide real-time instruction, guidance, and feedback to support student learning in clinical settings.
Ensure that all patient care complies with applicable legal, ethical, and regulatory requirements.
Collaborate with dental hygiene faculty to integrate clinical education effectively into the overall curriculum.
Review and sign off on patient treatment records and all required documentation to ensure accuracy and completeness.
Work Environment: This position is based in the dental hygiene program clinic. The Supervising Dentist works closely with faculty, students, and patients in a hands-on clinical educational environment.
Schedule: Part-time, based on program needs. Clinic hours may vary.
Terms of Employment: Hourly rate set by the Watertown School Board.
